so i have the trial version of 3Dmark06, and my scores are

Main Test Results
3DMark Score 4476 3DMarks
SM 2.0 Score 1757 Marks
SM 3.0 Score 1735 Marks
CPU Score 2092 Marks

the rig that this was tested on was:

cpu: e6600
ram: 2x1gb crucial ballistix pc2-8000
mobo: asus p5w-dh deluxe
gpu: 7800gtx

i realize that the gpu is a little old, but shouldnt my cpu score be much higher? all of this is at stock speeds.

No, that's right. Being a synthetic benchmark, all the 3Dmarks are worthless. If games run well, who cares what your 3Dmark score is?

I have an E6300 right now, and I only got ~1100 CPU on 3DMark06. A few months ago I ran the same set of benchmarks with my Pentium D 940, and it got ~1900 for the CPU. The Pentium was oc'd to 3.8ghz, but that still does not make it faster than an E6300.

Just dust your shoulders off and run some games; that is what really matters.
