Very loose shifter

My shifter feels very loose -- when it's in gear it has a lot of give...I can 'move' it up and down about an inch each way. How can I get this tightened? Guessing a loose bushing?

have you checked the linkage?

Probably bushings are either worn or loose in the linkage.
