Very irritating thing in Vista

Have Vista Business, and am part of the domain.

When I am on the company network, everything is 100%, machine is snappy and brisk (its a 2.00Ghz C2D, 2GB RAM HP notebook BTW).

When I am NOT connected to the network (i.e. at home, client, etc), and I click on, say, Computer, or Documents, I sit and wait for about 15sec for the window to open. I *know* that this is something to do with the domain settings, probably that the OS is looking for the network disks or something like that, but it is simply unnacpetable that I must wait that long for response.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Any solutions?

Are you logging in to the machine with a local user account when you are at home? If you've logged into the domain once on that machine, you can still log in using your domain user account even when you are disconnected. Obviously some things will be unavailable and will cause delays. If you want to log in with your domain user, you might have to select to work off-line in explorer to speed up anything looking for network access.

*NOT flamebait*

That's strange...I was using an XP machine with the same specs all summer on and off of a domain and never noticed any slowdowns....somethings probably wrong...

disable Network catching and offline documents

WinXP has the same behaviour too, so this is not Vista alone

but Vista is slow regardless 😛

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes, I also used to use XP with excatly the same domain settings and I never experienced this lag.

I see now that it is a known bug, well, fingers crossed that it gets fixed soon then.

I can't imagine going back to XP after using Vista.

Dual boot is easy.

there's still a long way, before the bugs gets out of Vista, don't hold your breath....

I find the user experience in Vista a lot better than in XP. I'm not holding my breath, if I was any less productive in Vista I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to switch back to XP. However it is faster and more stable than XP was for me, so it is staying, and I hope by the time SP1 is out this will be sorted out - if not before with the hotfixes which are a lot more prompt than they used to be.

yup, i'm still waiting for SP1 as well, right now my Vista install is mostly sleeping in the 2nd partition, unlike you, i can't get any work done on Vista, still waiting for software support for the Apps i use.
