Very intermittent boot after PS replacement

Hi all,

I'm a newbie on these forums and am hoping someone has a suggestion for my hardware issue. Back in 2005, I built myself a Tyan S2895 MB system with dual AMD Opteron single-core CPUs. Although obsolete nowadays, it was working fine until the Enermax PS blew out with sparks and a burnt smell. I replaced that with a Seasonic 800W PS.

Since replacement, I am faced with a very consistent problem - when I hit the power switch on the MB or the case button, 9 times out of 10, power comes on and the fans will all spin for just a second or so but then everything shuts down. Often, I will then get 4 single beeps. If I try this enough times, eventually, I'll get a full boot.

I've checked all plugs, wires, cables, etc. but to no avail. Perhaps something got damaged when the original PS blew out? Any ideas out there?

Thanks,

Andrew

Sounds like the opld PSU damaged other parts of the system when it blew. When a PSu goes out like that there is a very good chance other parts of the system got damaged in the prosses. Chances are you'll end up spending more trying to find the porblem then its worth. I think now would be a good time to build a new system.

But if you want you'll first want to try a differnt video card, then try differnt RAM then try a differnt motherboard. Now if you have a similar system where you can try the current video card and RAM in it then you can easly check those out. But if this system is a socket 775 or even 939 you'll have a hard time finding a good quality motherboard as a replacment. So just scrap it and build a new system.

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions mpilchfamily. I agree that something else must have gotten damaged when the PS blew out. I suspect the MB is the likely culprit. Once it does power up, the HDs, video card, and 4GB of ECC Corsair RAM all function normally and Windows XP runs fine. As you suggest, I'm planning to build a Core i7-920 system soon. In the meantime, just to get things running, I'm going to swap to a non-SCSI Tyan S2895 MB that a friend lent me, so I'll set that up until I pull the trigger on a i7 system.
