Very interesting documentary...on Discovery-Times

If you get Discovery Times channel, turn this on, this is amazing. Half the world's decomissioned ships are scrapped here...by hand. Right now, they're beaching a tanker!!!

No kidding...watching this is incredible. These guys walk into holds minutes after fuel lines are pumped dry and fire up torches...cut 10 story tall ships down using torches one small section at a time, letting each section fall onto the beach, hundreds of ships lined up one after waiting for the same fate. The ships are from the 70s, so they're full of asbestos, PCBs, lead paint, etc. Some even carried toxic and nuclear materials. Just amazing. I've never seen anything like this...and I've been to just about all the major US shipyards.

Not to mention all the industrial waste and hazardous chemicals ending up in there. What a load of for us here in the first world that crap like that ends up in the third huh?

A sad fact of the world. 🙁 They were showing women carrying out leftover things from the living quarters of a new ship...beds, lamps, some sort of exercise machine. The workers live across the street from the demolition yards in a shantytown made of ship scrap. Not entirely first world countries' fault though...there are some Indians making a fortune off these workers in reselling the scrap...

This is also showing on Discovery HD Theatre. If anyone's still interested, I would highly recommend watching it there, the imagery is amazing and HD should do it justice. Check Discovery.com for times, the name of the show is Shipbreakers. Wish I had a HD STB hooked up to my TV.
