Very interesting - CPU rating on different Linux distros

I have two machines, each with a P4/3.06/533 HT CPU with HT enabled. Under RedHat9, the ratings are 333-366 for each. Under Knoppix 3.4, they are 229-244. Both using 2.4.2 kernel. Thoughts?

Of course under Win2003, the values are around 200.

Anyone know for sure whether Red Hat is king of optimization? Can Linux boxes share a queue like Windows can? Can I create a generic image on multiple drives to put in my varying machines?

Where are you getting these CPU ratings?

Try running "top" at a command prompt. It will show you what processes are taking most of your CPU.

Edit:
<-- Hey! I just turned Platinum. 🙂

from the .tlg files in Find-A-Drug directory. When I get back to those machines, I'll run "top" as you suggest.

Hey, with 46 CPUs in 30-odd machines, should I be considering some sort of cluster? Or is that too much overhead?

Not to hi-jack this thread but can you fill in why you prefer Slackware?

I've been toying with Debian the past couple of weeks and I think it is one of the best Linux distros I've seen. I love apt-get!

I've heard that running FaD under VMWare gives ludicrously high CPU ratings, which is causing consternation among various members of the FaD community.

No thanks. I want legitimate values and scores, just trying to make the most of my junkpile. Win2003 seems to suck for this sort of thing.

OK, now this is interesting. F@H gets killed under linux. Linux version of that client rates my CPU at in the 400-500 range, where same box under Windows gets 4000-5000.

And what about the vote for Slackware versus Knoppix versus Red Hat?

Thoughts on cluster?

Hey Brouce, have you tried PCLINUXOS, it's mandrake based but really optimise dto be faster!🙂

Worth a try!!
