Very impressive EVGA GTX295 vs. Sapphire HD5870 video

Stumbled upon in youtube - these videos are great! They show us min, max, average + fraps real-time counters, plus side-by-side video footage of the benchmark compared real-time, plus real-time power draw! Not as comprehensive as a review, but great videos none the less.

I was very impressed with them. The 295 is faster, but both cards perform good.
Take a look (the call of juarez one is really good) -

If you watch his Crysis Warhead video, you can see some major slow-down on the 5870 when the guy shoots the land mines and they explode. Likewise you can see the gtx295 slow down when they approach the waterfall in COJ.

BTW, make sure you're watching in HD! 🙂

One of the reasons why I like the showing of min/max frame rates in reviews. Average frame rates do not show the whole story. If there are areas where the frame rates slow to a crawl then the game play can become frustrating.

Isn't the 5870 over $100 cheaper though? Even though they are the best cards each company has to offer, is it fair to compare two cards that differ in price by that extent? I am impressed at the price/performance ratio at this point.

i love the way he did the comparison very nicely done. the power consumption is also very cool to see. looks like 295 is still on top for most benchs, it does cost $100 more and uses about 100Watt more in power.

Well currently it is the proper comparison (and so is the 285 vs. 5870), since we're still waiting for GT300 to be released. Once that's out, then we can have a proper price/performance comparison.

Nice to see a single GPU card giving the dual gpu a run for its money, particularly with lower power consumption. The GT3xx series will be interesting.. nvidia has been pretty quiet, though.. aside from a new snide remarks when ATI launched.

edit:

I do have to wonder, though.. if their tech allowed them to make a GPU that uses so little extra power compared to the previous generation, why are the cards still friggin huge?

Perhaps that is the only way they can effectively cool a gpu as powerful as the 5870 has?

Great videos and setup. I think it would have been better if he showed actual game play between the cards, I think that's where there is the most dramatic differences between the 5870 and GTX295. Honestly, you still can't beat a fast, single GPU.

Crysis minimum framerate is bugged for 5870 on Windows 7 right now. It stutters in certain spots which is why the minimum is so low (I got around 19 with i7 @3.6). If you rerun the benchmark in Vista the minimum is up to 28fps.

ATI still needs to polish the Windows 7 drivers. It seems in every area transition right now the 5870 stutters for a bit (that's why the minimum fps was at one of the first frames), and the 295's minimum is well into the benchmark. That's one of the reasons I've moved back to Vista for gaming on the 5870 because the Windows 7's inconsistent performance.
