Very High Temperatures on i5. What's going on?

40% utilization and 62 celcius. What's going on?

Okay, I reapplied thermal paste and tried to reseat the cooler.

This is the cooler btw.

Normal operation, desktop webbrowsing I'm now getting an average temperature of about 50 c.

I had expected 35c. Please help.

50 C at idle? that's a wimpy aftermarket cpu cooler and Ivy Bridge runs warmer than Sandy Bridge but 50 C does sound a little high. are all the power saving features on and your cpu running at 1.6?

I'm running Vista so I'm guessing that some power saving features like downclocking might not be enabled.

How long does it take Prime95 to warm up, usually? I've been running it a few minutes now and the temps are around 60 celcius.

still, it seems no better than the stock cooler. Disappointed.

You'll get close to max temperature in 2-3 seconds running Prime. It may climb a little but it's basically maxed as soon as you load it.

IB usually idle around 40C, peaks at 80-85C with stock cooler. Tjmax is 105C. Meaning everything below is fine.

One more thing:

Right now I'm using the IGP while I wait for the video card to arrive.

Since the IGP processor unit is on-die, could that account for the heat increase? Meaning that when I install the video card and disable the IGP, I should expect a decrease in temperatures?

No. That's not it. You can look at the "De-lidding . . . i7-3770K" thread, and if that seems initially confusing, there are review articles going back to the Ivy release which explain what Intel did or didn't do. The Sandy Bridge core has an on-die iGPU, but runs significantly cooler . . . until people "do things" to their Ivy Bridge . . .

AFTERTHOUGHT: If the processor isn't a "K" version, such measures are not worth the trouble. But the same explanation about temperatures still applies.
