I'm looking to purcahse a good, and loud, personal CD player/AM-FM tuner. I've looked at the Aiwa XP-R210 and Sony D-FJ61, and while good players for $100-$125, they lack in "oomph". I can afford more. Does anyone offer a personal CD/radio player that can also read CD/RW in the $300-$500 range that would reflect it's cost in performance?

That appears to be a nice unit, but does not have all I am looking for: radio tuner and CD-RW capable. Sony is avoiding CD-RW so they can press their MD (mini-disk) technology. Perhaps I should look towards Europe?

You will have to look into some high-end headphones and a seperate headphone amp. The audio circuitry is the same in both the entry level and high-end portables. All you are paying for is features and smaller size.

For info on some real headphones and amps look here:

headphone.com

I would suggesting getting a mid level portable from Sony or Panasonic and a portable headphone amp. Then for headphones look into the Sennheiser HD495 (495 great, 490 very bad) or Grado SR80.
