I just sold my 9800 Pro today and have to ship it off tomorrow and wont have a PC until about the end of the week. I wanted to get the OEM 5950 Ultra on Newegg for $310 which was supposed to be in stock as of yesterday but still says its not in stock. I also saw the BFG 5900 Ultra for $335 and I figure that maybe I can just overclock that one to 5950 speeds and have the box that I so love and a few extras that come with it. I also saw the BFG 5950 Ultra which looks very nice and seems to have good OCing potential with that copper HSF for $372. Im not sure what to do and have only a few hours to make the decision so please help me somebody!

it is really just a matter of if you think the garentied extra few mhz is worth ~40$ to you. newegg also has 312$ retail saphire 9800pro's which are really 9800xts but at pro clocks and with less cooling, which i think is a much better deal than either of the fx cards; but i am pretty sure you are wanting to go back to nvidia so i suppose that doesn't help you. ;)

I would get the Leadtek or Gainward 5900U before BFG.
I don't have anything against BFG, but I like the software/filters of Leadtek, and the 50 extra MHZ on RAM for Gainward.

Like Anand said, don't waste your money on a $300+ card right now, as ATi and nVidia will release 2-3x faster cards for $400-500 by mid-April. I guess I got here too late, though. :\ I would have picked up a 5900/XT for ~$185 (MSI 5900XT @ NewEgg or Chaintech 5900 @ GameVE) for now.

because he couldn't get it to run stable and blames it on ati's drivers. ;)

Wow, that's nonsense.

I am an admitted Nvidia fanboy and after having switched to a 128mb 9800Pro I was ready to scream if there was even the slightest issue. Happy to report there are none and this card has taken all the abuse I can heap on it in the last couple weeks and comes back begging for more. I seriously couldn't be more pleased with it's performance.

:)

you'd rather had a 256mb radeon 9800pro sapphire. It will be better for aa and af and games of the naer future and will have full support for directx 9,unlike any fx.
u can wait for the next generation card to be out in april

I think PCTweaker's trouble with ATi's drivers is a valid reason to avoid their cards. There's no need to berate him about that, as some people may not consider the effort it takes to learn how to work around a PC's foibles worth it. I do think that spending $300+ on an FX card was a mistake, though, especially this close to the next gen. Every reasonably substantial post I've seem about NV40 reports it's amazingly fast. Not just faster than the current gen, but amazingly so. If you've got $300+ to blow, then buying an FX Ultra isn't a big deal. But if you expect this upgrade to last you a while, I think all signs point to spending that kind of money now as a mistake.

Very true, but as you said its based on his way of thinking and his experiences with Radeon.
I have to say though, that I hear ppl talkin about constant problems with ATI drivers.
Maybe I should consider myself lucky, cauz till now I had minor ones.

I'm not sure that's as bad a choice as a $370 5900U, at this point in time. :)

He actually got a 5950 U Pete, which admittedly isn't high on the "bang for buck" list, but isn't a bad choice for this year's games. Should be the bomb for Doom3.

As for waiting for the April cards, you know how that will go. The first month they're on the market, the good ones will be MSRP $499. to profit off the people who "gotta have it".

He needs a vid card now as his is sold, although I also see your logic of buying the XT and then re-selling with little loss when the new cards hit.

Lol thanks guys! I did order that $372 BFG 5950 Ultra last night but cancelled it about 3 minutes later to see if the OEM 5950 Ultra for $310 would be in today. At the moment it is not in and I just shipped off my 9800 Pro to my buyer and I dont have a PC anymore except for my dads laptop here. As much as I would like to wait until April that is too damn long without a PC and I need this bad. It would be nice to get a 5900XT now but if I saved my money and tried to sell it later on I still dont think I would have enough to get the topend or near topend Nvidia then. I will wait a few hours and then buy the BFG 5950 Ultra if the OEM 5950 doesnt come in. Thanks again!

evga has a tradeup program where if you buy their 5900se, you can get retail value back on the se for a next gen card within 90days from purchase. read the particulars on evga.com; dunno if it's a good deal or not, but sounds like something worth looking into for those that need something now, but may want a next gen card in the next month or two when they come out.
