Very glad I went with an extended warranty...

Most people say aftermarket extended warranties are a waste of money. Fortunately I did my research and went with a reputable company right after I bought my truck. Today I got the bill back from our local Chevy dealer (only take it there because they take aftermarket extended warranties) for rebuilding my transfer case (Autotrac 4wd system). Total was $1640 with me only paying $80 for an unrelated repair. About a year ago I had the water pump replaced and that was $700.... fully paid by the warranty.

I bought the truck (2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 Crew Cab 4x4) in Dec. 03 and bought the extended warranty around Apr 2004. Cost was $1700 for 7 year 100,000 mile warranty, $0 deductible.

So far my $1700 investment has paid about $500 I would have been otherwise responsible for...

I only have 22k left on the warranty, but from this point on I know it has already paid for itself. :)

Ouch...you had to rebuild your transfer case on an '04..?

Good call on the warranty, though!

It's a active transfer case, which shifts in and out as It detects the need. I live in Alaska.... needless to say, it detects slippage a lot with the roads up here. Dealer said it was wear and tear of 4 winter here that killed the clutch packs and plates....

well duh! what did we learn from this thread? In harsh climates, extended warranties of vehicles are much more valuable

Warranty Direct.... never had a problem with them (knock on wood).

The most annoyin thing they've done is send an inspector out to see my truck on Monday before they'd authorize the work. He looked at it, called them and they started work the same day.

MrWizzard, People who drive Hondas here keep the tow truck drivers and body shops in business. :)

Sounds like something that would have been covered by the manufacturer drivetrain warranty.

Drive Train Warranty: In some cases the drive train warranty continues after the basic warranty has expired. This part of the warranty covers most of the parts that make the vehicle move, including the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft. Like the basic warranty, "consumable" parts such as hoses and belts are not covered. However, most of the internal parts of the engine, such as the pistons and bearings, which are also subject to wear and tear, are covered by the drive train warranty.

Chevy is 5year/100,000

Maybe you should stop buying shitty American cars, but then you might have to change your icon.

I bought the three year warranty on my PC from Dell. 2 1/2 years into it, they came to my house and replaced my video card and motherboard, no charge. So, for the most part, I have a new computer.

Ja, it was less than four years old. Common warranty is five. Chrysler recently announced "lifetime".

Huh. And I just bought Fords for the last 12 years, and never had to have major warranty service done 1 time on 4 vehicles.

I guess the moral here is if you buy a Chevy, get an extended warranty.

Oh ho HO! ROFLOL! You are so OP!

Yea, most American cars were crap in the 80s and early 90s even. The problem is, Chevy is still building vehicles like they were in the 80s. GMCs are a little better, but they all still use the same mechanical parts. And the fancier trim won't hold it together for much longer on a GMC versus a Chevy. Cadillac or Buick anyone? LOL! I guess not. Must explain why those divisions are dying, along with all the old people that drive them.

Chevy failed so miserably on their subcompacts (Chevette anyone?) they had to start a whole new company, Saturn just to fix all the mistakes. And even that was a crap shoot on quality. I won't even bother to detail all my personal bad experiences with owned, rented and other peoples various brands of Chevys that would die in the middle of the road because various parts failed with no warning, leaving us stranded. But the seats sure were comfy while we waited for the tow trucks!

To all the idiots screaming, you should have bought a honda or a toyota, or anything else, those break down too, and yes, smart people buy warranties on them.

That's funny, because my parents have bought Fords for the last 15+ years without having any serious problems.
