I recently "upgraded" to an abit av8 MB with a 90 NM 3000 cpu.
I have a gig of ram that runs fine at 220 mhz and an 9800xt vga card.

this system is slower by far than my mobile 2600 was i get issues in games. And with the subpar amd hsf the bios says im 50-55 c at idle, thats at 200 mhz fsb with the cpu vcore at 1.4.

something tells me if i popped a fx55 in here things would be way different.

any hints or ideas or do i go back to my mobile till I can save a grand for a cpu.

im a saad panda

well first off you need to redo your case wiring to get better airflo. water cooling would be a big bonus. get name brand fans from zalman or other good brand, and put in as many as your case can hold. if your ram is ddr400, run it at 400mhz. that would greatly speed up your machine. also ddr500 would be a major option if your motherboard can support it. you could also overclock that processor some. with watercooling you could definitely eliminate heat issues. also maybe replace your stock hsf on your vga with a good zalman cooler, maybe get a fanned harddrive enclosure. these are just some suggestions.

By looking at your sig, you have/had your 2600-m overclocked to 2500mhz. When you upgraded, it was really a downgrade - with that overclock, it was a ~3600+ processor... soo then you stuck your 3000+ a64 in, at stock speed, and expected it to be faster :(

keep in mind none of the software in windows xp is designed for 64-bit architecture yet, so its not working up to its potential.

you need to re install windows, and install chipset drivers properly, and also newest radeon drivers

Aside from reinstalling Windows and drivers, if you didn't do that (you really should when you upgrade the processor and motherboard)...

You shouldn't be getting in the 50s IDLE even with the stock HSF (it's actually quite good, as it includes pre-applied Shin-Etsu thermal grease, which is about as good as Arctic Silver 5). 55-60 Celsius is usually the maximum accepted load range on one of these. Update your BIOS to see if you get more accurate readings (or find out if they're commonly overstated with this board) and/or make sure your HSF is installed right.

Pciber: The 3000+ should actually be faster; you can't compare XP clock speeds or PR ratings to those of the A64. 64-bit has nothing to do with this, either.

Next your going to tell me an athlon 64 2800 will outperform an athlon xp 3200. Go away.

some interesting points.
As for the 64 outperforming the 32 it should but does not.
my ram is ddr 400 and btw thats as low as this board will go in dual channel default is 204 mhz fsb.
when I benched at stock using performance test it was about or below par with an xp2500much better memory bandwidth per megahert however.
i have the xp 64 bit beta installed and I see about a 10% increase in performance when running xp in 64 bit mode however most utilities and software do not work with the 64 bit xp core.

when the man said I downgraded he was right,,,,untill I get an fx cpu in there that is

MarkFW900 also has that board and it reports high temps and we suspect the AGP/PCI clock is not working cause all the ram he has bought and tried will not run close to rated speeds in it. It has also ben a very troublesome board...

He has an MSI Neo2 coming this week and it will pretty much conclude our thoughts then....

I am able to dynamicly oc from 1800 mhz to 2007 mhz no problem.
I had to go out and buy 2 single sided dimms to even get it to run with more than 512 meg.
so yes memory issues are a problem there.
as for temps the hsf is cool to the touch and the board is not in a case so I think bios is lying.
