Very confusing... Windows XP from Visual Studio .NET Launch question

I am very confused. Since Microsoft is going to shut down my current install via SP1, I have to isntall my XP from the Visual Studio .NET Launch. I finally (for the first time) took out my disk to look at it and it doesn't make sense to me.

The disk and sleeve have the following information:
"Not for retail or OEM distribution "
- That makes sense to me.
"Unlicensed Software - Illegal without separate license from Microsoft"
- This doesn't make sense, whereis the license? Is it inside the shrink wrap for .Net academic?
"Porduct Key: xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx"
- This doesn't make sense, why is there a product key if I have to activate? Or do I not have to activate? Or do I need both?

Could someone please clarify this for me. Thanks.
 
It looks like they just gave you the media, you still have to buy a license to legally use it. Sort of like their Open Licensing, a company pays an ungodly amount of money to get CDs with every peice of software MS makes (we're talking hundreds of CDs a month) but none of them have licenses for use.
 
You go to a university, I take it? If So, don't worry, that copy IS legal for you to install.

The MS University Relations team that gave these cd's out said that the only difference is that you can't call for tech support.
 
MY copy if from the Visual Studio .NET launch that took place at a University, I did not obtain it through a University.
