very bizarre problem

have an HPpavilion XT853. installed xp pro on it. went to install AOL and it won't pick up a dial tone. all drivers are working and device manager shows no problems whatsoever. so i tried a different modem and installed the drivers. same problem, no dial tone. it would sit there and freeze time and time again when trying to dial for access numbers.

so i figured maybe it's aol. i installed netzero and the same problems occured: freezing when dialing out and no dial tone message appearing.

after that i reinstalled windows completely and installed aol/netzero again and the same problems are still occuring?

there are no driver issues from what the device manager shows me, aol detects the modems. the phone line is a working line.

what the hell?

need any more info, let me know... i've never ran into this problem, maybe there's something in the settings i can check/turn off/whatever?

🙁

I will assume that you have checked the obvious 😀 Like the phone socket is working / correctly wired. The cable you are using is good? Try pluging a phone into the same wire does that give you a dial tone?

Are you certain the Phone Line at the end of the wire you are connecting
to the computer is ok ? ? ... Hook a phone up right to it and double check it.
Also, some modems may need the wires from the phone line reversed.
You might also look in device manager for any issues with the modem or
anything else and correct it.

Try going into the Modem itself .. Start, Settings, Control Panel, Phone & Modem
There are many options on the Modem that can be checked, including having
the computer Test both the Modem and the Phone Line
One thing in modem options you can check is that the Dial Control Option
"Wait for dial tone" is Checked ... it is under Modem Properties Tab

My own personal guess is AOL messed something up .. I would do a full
uninstall of their crap, reboot, run a good reg cleaner, then see if your modem
will dial out to Netzero

Check to make sure you have the phone cord connected into the correct socket in the modem.. one is incomming from the wall, the other goes out to a phone...

all good suggestions....
dealing with 56k gives me headaches....
I use to twak 56k for gaming...alot of tricks to the trade...

Probably the best suggestion I read was...

Could be AOL....I have never met a person who was happy using AOL....

I usually plug my phone into the line out on my computer just to make sure the line is working. If it works, then I know everything works.
