Very basic questions about Ipod Nano functionality

can the nano do the following:

1. pause in the middle of a song, be turned off, then resume from the pause point when turned back on for playback.

2. forward scan at variable speeds through a song.

thanks in advance.

the reason i ask is my wife has an mp3 player that resets to the beginning of a song after being paused in the middle of a song and turned off, and it doesn't have ff scan through a song, only forward advance an entire song at a time, both of which are really annoying for podcasts or larger mp3 files.
