Vertical Sync on = Lockups?

Hello. I was playing Counter-strike today with my new setup, but everytime I had vertical sync turned off my computer would lockup about 5 minutes into the game. I took it off and it doesn't lock up, but it's alot choppier. Does anyone know how to fix this? I have the newest reference drivers, newest bios for my motherboard and the newest 4in1 drivers, thanks in advance.
