Vertical Raptors?

I have two new Raptors for a Raid0x2 on a P4P800. I have a Lian-Li PC-82 case with the bottom vertical drive cage. Can the RAPTORS run vertical in that bottom drive cage? Can't find any WD documentation other than the warning not to tip on end from PDF file. Any one know?

their cavair drives are 360, but your not suppose to balance them on ends because they could fall and damage drive

He said balance. That would imply letting it stand on end without any support. If you put screws in it it wouldn't be balancing anymore.

If you look at rackmount servers, you will see that you can run a hard drive on pretty much any side. I think the important thing is that once you start running it in that position for a while, run it in that same position FOREVER! Moving parts tend to "wear" in a certain pattern, and gravity affects that. If you go upsetting that, it might turn out badly.

I am not speaking from experience, though, so take this with a grain of salt I suppose 😉

But if that were the case, shouldn't you rotate it around so gets even wear? Kinda like tire rotation?

Hm. I'm really not sure to tell you the truth. The whole concept was suggested to me by an old mechanic-turned-computer nerd, and he was speaking from automotive experience, not hard drive experience. 😛

1st nothing was never said here, stated, typed or bit maybe but never said,
2nd Balance on Ends is not the same as Balance on the Sides but I've never known a HD to claim to be safe when dropped or fallen/tipped over.
3rd...to answer the ?, Yes it is safe to mount the Drives in the Lian-Li PC-82 case with the bottom vertical drive cage.

You shouldn't have any problem with mounting them in that configuration.

Changing the position of the drives is no problem. NEVER change the postion of the drive while running! (like holding it in your hand and twisting to feel the resistance from the gyroscopic effect!)

The "don't reposition a drive once it's been running.." is irrelavent with the new fluid bearing drives. 😀
