It's a peer popularity test. You draw a vertical line on your forehead before class.
The social ranking of the first person who asks you about it determines your score.

If your teacher asks you what it's for before any of your classmates... you lose.

If you draw vertical lines through the graph of the equation and the lines only ever hits the graph once it passes the vertical line test and is a function. If any of the vertical lines hit your graph more than once the equation is not a function.

With a straight edge. Once you get used to looking at graphs then you can just eyeball it and be OK.
