Vertical Hz on an LCD vs. Graphics Card

Well, I bought my first LCD. It's a 17" Realsync I purchased from PC Club. I mainly got it because my best friend recommended it. Anyway, I bring it home, it's great and everything, but I can't do 85hz @ 1024x768. The highest vertical frequency it's capable is 75hz. So crap! I'm used to playing games at 85. Anyway, my same friend (who is an experienced and avid guru and gamer) told me that he runs his games at 60hz. I was thinking that's crazy until he said that the quality of the graphics card makes more of the difference (vs. vertical Hz), in his opinion.

So I'm just curious as to what everyone elses opinion is. My mom's ViewSonic VX715 can do 85hz and it's a really nice LCD and I'm thinking about swapping them out. On the other hand, I do need a new graphics card (mine is really old. GeForce 2 Ultra. Yes... 2, not 3). So would a better graphics card really make a difference in games even though it will have a vsync of 75hz?

Thanks for the input!

a new graphics card would serve you much better. The hz is different on an LCD than a CRT. 60hz on a LCD is ok, but 60hz on a CRT isn't so good. What's your Graphics card slot?

If you're talking AGP, then I'd get this card:

It's an X800GTO.

It is about the equivelant of the Nvidia 6800 and is usually a bit faster than the 6800 in most cases. It'll make a HUGE improvement on your performance in games. I know because I came from a similar situation. I had a Geforce 4 MX440-SE(I know, it was a slow card and the SE in there meant it was slower than the vanilla 440), which I Believe was about the power of a Geforce 2 ultra, or maybe even slower, I don't know. But I did jump up to the 6800 and the 6800 made a HUGE improvement in my games and gave me the ability to play things that would make a Geforce 2 tremble. So this X800GTO should do the same for you.

and this Power Supply to be sure you can power this:
