i bought this for my AMD X2 5000:
HSF

i'm used to hsf blowing up, away from the cpu.

this one the fan is 90 degrees from the cpu.

should i face the fan so the air blows out the back of the case?
or face it so that it blows air on the memory, thus cooling it? (i plan to overclock.)

thx

Well look at it this way. Any air that will be coming off that heatsink will be hot air, do you really want that blowing over your OC'd ram? Have it point to the back of the case where there is (typically) an exhaust fan. That way it will get that air out of the case quicker, and make for a cooler case/proc/components.

And typically a normal HSF will blow air downwards, not upwards

Blow the hot air out the back. Cooler air will be drawn in from the front of the case as the hot air is blown out. If you really feel you need extra cooling for the ram, you could get something like a Corsair Ram cooler.
