Vertical/Horizontal positioning -from linux -back to 2k??

I have to adjust my vert and horizontal positioning just slightly when I boot from Win 2k to linux or vice versa. Also, i was playing with the software that comes with Mandrake 8 and I launched screem, well now I have this image in the center of my desktop that refuses to go away. Its like the app froze up but left an artifact of the screem config screen behind. I've tried changing wall paper to now avail....
