Version command?

Very often I need to find out the version of some program in Linux(Red Hat 7.3), for example perl or jdk or kde. Therefore, I need some general command if such exist to find out the version of the packages in Red Hat 7.3.

rpm -qa | grep name

 

[Tiger]

Or filename -v at the prompt if it's already installed.
