(04-21) 17:50 PDT MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) --

Two pieces of a highly radioactive fuel rod are missing from a Vermont nuclear plant, and engineers planned to search onsite for the nuclear material, officials said Wednesday.

The fuel rod was removed in 1979 from the Vermont Yankee reactor, which is currently shut down for refueling and maintenance. Remote-control cameras will be used to search a spent fuel pool on the property, officials said.

"We do not think there is a threat to the public at this point. The great probability is this material is still somewhere in the pool," said Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Neil Sheehan.

But Sheehan said it was possible the spent fuel was mixed in with a shipment of low-level nuclear waste and ended up at a repository in South Carolina, or a facility in Washington state. He said it was also possible it was taken to a nuclear testing facility run by General Electric, which designed the plant.

The material would be fatal to anyone who came in contact with it without being properly shielded, Sheehan said. Spent nuclear fuel also could be used by terrorists to construct so-called dirty bombs that would spread deadly radiation with conventional explosives.

The NRC is helping plant officials in the search. The rod was part of the fuel assembly used to power the reactor. One of the missing pieces is about the size of a pencil. The other piece is about the thickness of a pencil and 17 inches long.

"It would be very difficult to remove this material from the site without somebody knowing about it," Sheehan said. "It would set off radiation monitors."

Sheehan cited the heightened awareness of the need to control nuclear material that followed the Sept. 11 terror attacks. "We don't want this falling into the wrong hands," he said. "This is something we would never take lightly."

Gov. James Douglas, after speaking Wednesday afternoon with the head of the NRC, said he was "very concerned" about the missing fuel at the plant, run by Entergy Nuclear.

"This situation is intolerable," he said in a statement.

In 2002 a Connecticut nuclear plant was fined $288,000 after a similar loss. That fuel was never accounted for.

Vermont Yankee is located in the southeastern town of Vernon, on the border with Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

The state's Public Safety Department and Homeland Security Unit also were notified of the missing fuel.

Would that this were an isolated incident, but it most certainly is not.

Read this and weep:

"In a recent audit report, the Inspector General of the US Department of Energy recognizes, that the ministry "could not fully account for nuclear materials loaned or leased to domestic licensees." This is bad news, especially at times of growing fear of terrorist attacks.

The report entitled "Accounting for Government-Owned Nuclear Materials Provided to Non-Department Domestic Facilities "(http://www.ig.doe.gov/ig-0529.pdf), the Office of the Inspector General was issued on 26 October 2001. It states that the NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) Nuclear Materials Management and Safeguards System (NMMSS) an electronic database, reported 180 negative balance inventories concerning 12 different government-owned nuclear materials at 119 domestic licensee locations. In other terms, some significant amounts of diverse nuclear materials provided by loan or lease to other government agencies, academic institutions, and commercial facilities, under the 1954 Atomic Energy Act, are unaccounted for and might have been lost or stolen."

Probably some Phish fans thought they would look cool in their dorm room. I repeat - DO NOT use fuel rods to light your bong! Bong water is not an acceptable coolant.

So, does this mean Vermont has some "hot rods"? :)

Until and unless something better comes along, I'll continue to support nuclear power.

Unless we are all ready to shut off our computers. :)

Everyone here in VT is freaking out over these fuel rods :p How hard could it be to find them?! Its the 'big story' everynight on the news, and I am so sick of hearing about it. They said the last time they saw them was 1979... if they get out, someone is definlty going to get fired.

This is why we are fighting terror in Iraq because Iraqis have MASSIVE terror cells here in the US and have been training al-qaeda in Iraq

WTF are you talking about? Iraqi terror cells in the US? when the heck did this happen? The link between al-queada and iraq is pretty weak considering its common knowledge that bin laden and sadaam didn't like each other. But who the hell told you that there were Iraqis in the US plotting to kill innocent americans, especially before we bombed them? Links please!

Probably used to build a school stadium or something... They use old oil drilling stems to build stadiums around here. Drill stems often come out of the ground radioactive... I'm sure these were tested though ;)

Whoops. You got me. In regards to the OP, I'm VERY surprise Howard Dean hasn't been mentioned. Wasn't there a report about the lack of security at a Vermont plant back when Dean was frontrunner? Perhaps it would've been a more pressing issue if Foxnews and CNN were't so obsessed with YEAAGGHHH!!!'s.
