Saw this linked over at /r/android.

I'm excited you got your Nexus 7 but not all LTE tablets are created equal. It's not part of our line up & can't be activated^JH

We apologize for any inconvenience; however, it can not be activated. Go to http://vzw.com/products to view compatible tablets^LA

There's some comments in the Reddit thread about people with N7 LTEs getting them activated at Verizon stores, with new SIMs, apparently before the policy disseminated out.

Buyer beware?

its pretty stupid since you could easily activate say an ipad, and then move the sim over.

verizon is crazy, with all these carrier restrictions. i'm glad i left verizon , as though the service was good, at least philosophically they are ridiculous about technology.

Heh... Verizon just pissed off the wrong guy. Not only is Jeff Jarvis a somewhat famous tech journalist, but he also has over 2 million Google+ followers.

Someone at the Verizon PR department is getting a headache right now.

Makes you wonder if it's Verizon just being dicks or if Google never got permission and is trying to force a runaround method based on the 700MHz block being open by obligation to the FCC. At the very least all parties involved knew about this since the announcement of the product itself.

Sure, we'll be happy to certify it for our network, just plaster this logo on the front, back and side, and install these 36 unremovable apps first.

I thought part of the deal of them getting the LTE spectrum was they couldn't do this crap?

Just switch all your devices to T-Mobile and tweet to your 2 million followers about it.

Afaik this is a violation of the conditions of their LTE spectrum purchase.

I don't think so. They have to have all devices unlocked, which isn't the issue here. If Verizon wants they can decide not to activate N7's on their network.

The open access wording gives Verizon several outs if they actually care to use it. Devices still have to be tested and certified for use on the network and they can block a device if they determine it will be unsecure on their network

I think this is fun to watch though. Verizon and Google clearly do not like each other. Verizon is upset that Google got the FCC to tack on a couple of rules to the c block spectrum as long as the minimum bid was met. Then Google immediately bid the amount required even though everyone knew Google didn't really want this spectrum. It probably cost Verizon at least a cool billion, maybe a billion and a half (though there's no way of really knowing).

They tried to kiss and make up with the Galaxy Nexus. That went... not well...

Now the rumors that the Nexus 5 is going to include LTE bands for every carrier BUT Verizon. It's kind of funny, really.

for that I will tether the crap out of my Verizon unlimited, using FoxFi for free. Just because I could. I can't stand Verizon as a company.

maybe season 1-6 of Mad Men 1080p, and few more seasons of Top Gear 720P.

The LTE activates the CDMA, so that doesn't matter, unless you want to use a non-CDMA phone (then it won't work).

yeah, but LTE bands aren't as widespread/compatible as GSM 2G/3G/4G ...

so there still isn't a lot of phones he could play with

(vs GSM... i could buy an int'l S4 with the octa core, or a USA version with quad core, may have to stick to 2G/3G...... but he must get that verizon model)

Jeff Jarvis couldn't resolve it with Verizon, so he's sending a formal complaint to the FCC's enforcement division. :)

Verizon made an excuse, though:
http://news.verizonwireless.com/news/2013/09/verizon-wireless-device-certification-statement.html

The Google Nexus 7 is not yet a Verizon 4G LTE certified device, though it entered our process in August and we expect it will be certified shortly. Once the device is certified, we will work with Google to enable the device to be activated on our 4G LTE network.

Verizon Wireless’ certification process, which generally takes between four and six weeks, is one of the most rigorous testing protocols of any carrier, and is focused on guarding the safety and security of our network. Certification is done by third party labs approved by Verizon, and selected by the device manufacturer. Over the years, Verizon Wireless has certified hundreds of devices; information on the certification process is available to anyone at opennetwork.verizonwireless.com.
Verizon is committed to ensuring our customers have the best overall experience when any device becomes available on the nation's most reliable network.
