Court rules telco must give up user info
In a ruling that could have a significant impact on broadband subscriber privacy, a U.S. court ordered Verizon Communications to turn over the name of one broadband subscriber who they had been protecting from RIAA lawyers since last August, when the music industry used the DMCA to try and force Verizon's hand. The individual, who is accused of having downloaded more than 600 songs in one day, may have been completely oblivious to their role in the ongoing battle, though will be probably be considerably less so once the RIAA begins making an example of them.
