I live in one of the LTE rollout cities (Akron/Cleveland OH). I'm not entirely thrilled about the pricing, or the lack of devices. Kind of a stupid launch on vzw's part with no phones and only a modem launching.

They all do it that way. Sprint launched WiMax with a modem first, same with T-Mobile's HSPA+. I assume its easier to roll out a modem than a phone.

why is it going to take so long to come out with phones, are they waiting for dual core chips that can better take advantage of 4g speeds? they knock out new 3g phones every month

My guess is they are still optimizing the chips for battery life, but again that's purely a guess.

Plans are more reasonably priced than I thought they would be but you are going to chew through 5GB's in no time with those speeds.

"Overall, browsing on our computer felt nearly identical to our home broadband, and even HD video playback on YouTube was snappy and responsive over the network. And did we mention we were only getting two out of four bars on our connection? "

Sounds good to me :)

How many people are cruising around on their LTE network when that test was ran? :p Might be a different people when everyone starts getting LTE phones next year.

A USB modem is just an antenna with some logic and an interface, much easier than designing a whole device like a smart phone though.

It's still not going to compare to a home broadband connection. Its nice for on the go though.

True, but then again how many issues do you have with Verizon's 3g as of now? May not be the fastest but I never have any issues with speed. With the upgraded backbone for LTE I don't think it will be too much of an issue.

Bingo!

Makes no sense to laud the performance of a network that's not being used in a typical manor with lots of cell phones. When Sprint was testing 4G in SLC the speeds were very good but it's not so good now.

yes reliablility will be a major issue, esp once millions of people are on the lte network. i cant think of the last time my dsl was down but verizon 3g is still really flaky. they have frequent outages for hours at a time and even in daily use there will be periods of 5 minutes or more where it just doesnt work

huh? If I get a signal, I get 3G. I have only seen 1x maybe once every several weeks.

Hey, you guys are making VZW sound like AT&T. I'm sure it's not THAT bad. I do really hate going into San Francisco with AT&T though. It's a total joke. 4 bars but no data goes in or out. Whoops?

i agree with that. im not saying att is better, only that i wouldnt replace my dsl with 4g if you absolutely postively need internet service when you need it

they advertise 4g as being able to penetrate into the home better. I had a crap connection with verizon 3g that always went back to 1x and so I had to return my droid. Is 4g really going to solve this for me?

I guess the VZW Iphone (in Jan.) won't be 4g intially judging from what you guys are saying about no phones for a while.

Verizon's 4g should. It runs at 700mhz, which lower means better building penetration.

There really isn't a need for 4G yet, unless you're doing some serious downloading or tethering, I find virtually no difference between 3G and 4G in day to day use on my phone....

Derp. What Verizon LTE phone are you using? :p

? Am on Sprint, you know as well as I there are no Verizon 4G phones out yet, but big pipes are big pipes, and I'm wondering if we need big pipes for tiny devices, the prices with tiered data aren't compelling, especially if you consider the overage costs.

Seems like 4G is more of a marketing blitz at this point.

If I'm at home, my connection is fast enough through WiFi and I have no data caps. If I'm at work, I have WiFi and don't have the time or need for big pipes on my portable device.

When I'm out & about with my phone, I really don't need 4G on a 4" screen, am I gonna stream movies while I'm driving?

I think we're getting to where we are with PC's as far as speed, etc, it used to be that there was a compelling reason to upgrade to the latest and greatest, but I'm seeing no compelling reason for 4G on portable devices unless you're streaming movies or doing video chat, which really hasn't taken off like I thought it would.

Conversely, I'm more concerned with having fast data on the go. When I'm at home, I don't have to go far to get to my desktop or laptop. When I am out and about, my cell phone becomes my sole interface to the internet - and a fast connection to said internet makes a big difference. Web browsing on a faster connection is much better.

Not to mention the latest trend in mobile is video chat. Have you used 3G video chat on the Evo? I tried it on the Epic and it was terrible. That's going to be a big benefit of widespread 4G speeds.

Overall speed is one thing but a major advantage of these new data technologies is latency. There is still a big difference between home broadband and 3g latency. As these technologies advance and latency decreases the overall experience will be much more "broadband" like. Verizon is reporting that average latency with LTE is half of that of their 3G network.

and latency is what exactly--how fast the network responds to a request made by a device?
