it dont think its just marketing, i think theyre finally being punished for coming out with stuff with old specs. these phones just came out a month or two ago, theyve never discounted their phones like this before. they know theyre in for a hammering once nexus 5, g2, etc.. come out so theyre trying to get what they can now

I remember when motorola and verizon actually had a decent ad campaign a few years ago.

I'd say I follow tech pretty closely and still am only vaguely aware of these phones.

I know the new moto x... and the maxx has been out forever with the huge battery... but the ultra, mini, maxx hd are all just blurry. Never hear about em on tv or see them on tech sites.

I don't know. The whole DROID campaign? Maybe it got a few tech nerds interested, but honestly I don't think it did much to sway users from iOS. Samsung was the one that got everyone switching.

I'm somewhat interested in the Droid Maxx. I'm due for a new phone. Droids are so damned ugly though.

They probably raised service costs, or added a "Because we can" fee to the bill to compensate.

why would anyone bother with a contract

if you were going to spend $500 on a phone that is basically only useful on Verizon, I don't know why you wouldn't get a contract.

Although, maybe thats for people that have grandfathered unlimited plans or don't have upgrade eligibility.

I am currently test driving the Moto Ultra in red ( disclaimer: I am part of the VZW lifestyle reviewer program) I've been using this phone as my primary device for a little over a week and have to say I really like it for the following reasons.

1. Form Factor - it is so slim it fits into most of my pockets & I can perform most tasks one handed and I have small hands. The 5 inch screen is crisp and big enough to get actual work done.

2. Active notifications - having the time, my email, twitter, Facebook notifications displayed clearly with less drain on the battery is nice.

3. Touchless Control - "okay Google now" works reliably for me in all but the loudest situations. Voice dictation is quite good.

4. The radios - I get reception in places where it wasn't possible in the past.. think a basement with no windows.

5. Motorola Migrate - made moving my data over from my other phone very easy.

Battery life is actually not bad, I get through the working day with it & considering how thin the phone is can't complain about not getting 2+ days without a charge.

The one thing I do wish was different? The red version case is good looking, an attention getter, but it's so glossy I find myself wiping my fingerprints off of it obsessively :)

This is a good device, a big departure from Moto's usual thick, brick like offerings, it performs well and has a premium feel in the hand, I've enjoyed using it.

The radios are pretty solid (in my experience) anyway. I've been in places where my SGS3 has no signal, while a Bionic has (granted, weak) a serviceable signal.

Our work Cafe is located in the basement of the building & I generally can't get much of a signal but my Ultra is useable which was a pleasant surprise.

im pretty satisfied with the signal my razr m gets (much better than old 3g phone) inside and farther from towers etc...but since i never used phones other than motorola i didnt realize there was that much difference compared to other brands. it would be interesting if the newest motorola phones are even better than the razr m generation, which are already pretty good

i had great luck with the first razr maxx as far as signal strength. id always have customers tell me "oh, we dont get signal down here..." right when im making a call. that damn phone had signals in the worst places, which i was ok with. i do a lot of work in plants and such, where cell signals are pretty rare. my sgs4 is doing a great job at that as well, even better than my old maxx.

I've always liked the Maxx line, but I'm not on Verizon anymore so I stopped caring about it.

Likewise for me as well.

I ran a Razr M for some time and loved that phone. Probably my favorite Android phone stock. I missed some customizations the dev community gives, but knew what I was getting for myself. The phone was fast, crisp, smooth and gave me 2 days of battery life. Very nice phones.

Wish Moto would bring out GSM versions of the phones for AT&T and T-Mobile.
