So I finally got my DSL yesterday.... and my download speeds are ok... ~30-40 k.... but at my friend's house, he gets 50-65k... WTF? I mean, I know download speeds are certainly going to be different, but by 20k??? :|

I also have Verizon. I get max download speeds of ~60k. My gf, 2 blocks away, gets download speeds of ~85k. It really makes me mad because no one even downloads anything! They use it for chat and that's it.

guys, your download speeds are an inverse relation to how far awa y from the phone company you are. The bigger the distance, the less the download speed.

Though I agree with you in that Verizon is SUCK, I think your problems may have to do with your settings. Unless you are really far from the CO, you shouldn't get that much of a difference in speed I think. Go to dslreports and check out how to tweak your broadband settings.

Yeah, what Doggiedog said. If you've never had broadband before, your registry probably isn't tweaked to maximize your throughput. I can't remember the exact change off-hand, but DSLreports.com has it. Have to set DefaultRcvWindow to a higher number.

I have Verizon DSL (1.5 down) now (and two other DSL providers previously) and, unless I tweaked them, downloads were only half as fast.

Of course, it could be something else. But check it out.

Good luck.

I'm gonna check out dslreports but in the meantime, does anyone know if old wiring makes a difference in speed? My house in about 30 years old.

I have done some of the tweaks off of dlsreports, but it didn't change a thing. I'm gonna dig around some more when I get some time.

Yes old wiring can make a difference.

Line quality is what matters. Line quality decreases with distance and poor wiring. (not just in your house but the wires between you and the CO, etc.)

Does your DSL modem allow you to see what your line quality is? (reported in dB)
