They'd prefer not to. Cases are ugly and bulky. A solid enough phone doesn't need it.

Agree. My Droid has been dropped, sat on, smashed between my laptop and desk and only shows a little wear after 13 months.

This is a lovely sentiment, I'm sure you'll back it up with something equally clever like "lolz its a $700 mini computer y wouod u drop it DUH!", but the fact is, cell phones are portable, handheld devices, that occasionally get dropped. Many cell phones can handle being dropped without breaking. Some cell phones - such as those with giant glass panes on both the front & back - are more prone to break in such a situation. That attribute is a negative for a lot of people, making a condescending, dismissive attitude toward the issue misplaced.

All kidding aside. Most of the time Apple will replace your iPhone if the glass gets broken.

Apple Stores replace the back glass for $35.

As far as cases, it's part of many owners (of all cell phones) experience, they buy a case. I see many more cell phones in cases than not, people compare cases etc, look at XDA, the sub forums always have a large thread on cases.

Again, it boils down to the essence of the iPhone and Apple's draw, they're a manufacturer that has always chosen aesthetics as a key selling feature, not durability, it's been a fairly effective strategy.

The OG Droid doesn't have lag...provided you're rooted, with a custom kernel, and Bugless Beast.

It's annoying that you'd even have to go through all that in the first place. Laggy UI's is exactly the reason I am afraid to get an Android phone in the future.

The fastest UI on an Android phone I've seen is on a Samsung Epic. And it makes me cringe when compared to another friends iPhone 4 or my iPad.

To me the GUI has to be watery smooth before I even consider any other feature.

The entire point of Android is being able to do what you want to your phone.

If you don't like the UI, use Launcher Pro, or get a ROM that has no lag.

I just wonder if Apple will finally see the light and make an iPhone Global...supporting quad band GSM, CDMA, all 3G bands, 4G/LTE/HSPDA, etc. and just unlock the bastard in the US for any and all to use.

If they want any chance of competing against Android they must do this.

I meant that as. You can't fix laggy UI with a ROM. It's an inherent problem due to the lack of hardware acceleration of graphics. Sure you can hide it with a ROM, but it's still there.

This is a lie. And what is the difference between hiding laggy UI and not having it? Isn't that...exactly the same thing?

I believe his point is that even the smoothest ROM isn't going to give you the same experience as a truly GPU accelerated ROM. And really - it hasn't to this point. I've seen some Android ROMs much smoother than stock, but put it next to WP7 or iOS and its still considerably less smooth.

Which is not to say its inferior - just that the UI isn't as smooth, and likely won't be until Google fixes it.

Yeah, exactly. I guess I wasn't as clear as I thought I was.

So, if I don't experience a laggy UI, and my interaction with the phone is smooth, fluid, and fast, the laggy UI is still there but hidden from me?

Those that say the Epic/Galaxy S phones have a smooth UI, you've obviously rooted it, wiped TouchWiz off the phone, done the lag fix, and probably a few other things too. A stock Galaxy S with TouchWiz makes a stock Cliq look fast.

When I had the Epic 4G, the stock TouchWhiz UI was the smoothest Android experience I've ever seen. *shrug*

the fact that you have to do a buncha special shit just to get a smooth user experience with no hiccups and studdering for android phones is a big reason people like iOS phones better. it just works out of the box.

in fact that is why many people like the iphone in general ... great UI and easy to just pickup and use, w/out having to do a buncha shit just to get it the way you like it. it comes the way most people like it.

You can't get rid of TouchWiz on Galaxy S phones. All these custom roms that claim it's TouchWiz free still has bits and pieces in it.

Your hate for Touchwiz has blinded you. Touchwiz has lot of refinements Google could really add to their stock OS. Only thing most people don't like about Touchwiz is the home launcher and that can be easily changed by running Launcherpro, ADW, Zeam, etc. Launcherpro with Touchwiz > stock Android.

Yep. The old TW was pretty awful, but TW 3 included with the Galaxy S is actually pretty nice nice. I liked it.

Pretty much. iOS simply works better out of the box. Nerds might think it's cool to hack and waste time tinkering with trivial stuff but most people want things to simply work.

i'm a nerd myself (have even made an app for both iOS and Android), but I'm also a big GUI person in general, and personally I prefer the iOS over Android by a lot, mainly due to the UI and functionality.

I was actually surprised by the sluggishness of just the emulator for Android when I was devving my app for it, I figured it was just the slowness of it being emulated. But when I actually tried it on an android phone (have only personally used 3 android phones), i noticed the sluggisnhess and hiccuping is just part of the OS. it just kind of turned me off totally. The iPhone emulator runs silky smooth and actually FASTER than the actual device in some instances.

Sure Android can do more and is more open, but personally, i don't give a crap about that kinda stuff heh.

I'm going to be on the preorder list as soon as I receive the email from verizon!

I like it too. I understand people have different preferences. Positive about Android is that it allows you to customize certain things to your liking. Bateluer can like his bland "pure" Android experience or whatever that means. But he makes it sound like anything other than Cyanogenmod rom or stock Google Android rom are terrible.
