GET IT!!

Seriously, my RoadRunner Cable coss that same amount every month for a lot less bandwidth.

However I've never used it and have no experience with it, so I don't know of any specific pros/cons...

My dad has it at his house. Says it's real fast (although this is in MA, not NJ, so YMMV). Installation was apparently a PITA (I guess they had the modem misconfigured or something, because it kept dropping connections for like two weeks until he got someone with a clue to come out and look at it).

Also, Comcast was *not* happy when he dropped their cable modem service for this. They had someone calling him to try to get him to switch back.

Sadly, its not my area yet :(

Hopkinton (about 30mi west of Boston). He just got it a few months ago; it hasn't been available there for very long.

I thought it was available in most of the Greater Boston area, although I don't know about out near Worcester.

Same here, except I'm in the middle of the city so I probably will be last.

anyone know if they monitor not necessarily what you download, but your limits of downloads?

I live in New York (on Long Island), unfortuatly the only brodband service I CAN get is stupid overpriced cable. It's fast, but they throtle me sometimes (when I download my pr0n ;) ).
Get FiOPs, there are like 3 packages:
1.) A cheap one, probably slower than my cable/same speed
2.) The 15MB/2MB the OP is talking about (cost the same/a little less than cable)
3.) 30/5MB's insanly expensive, but insanly fast!!111!!

Everyone will probably get the second one because, who uses more than 15mb anyway. And price/perf. ratio will be a hell of alot better than cable.

Buddy of mine has it, and yes the install is a bit of PITA. But he LOVES the speed and reliability of it compared to his Cox cable internet he had before. Now one warning it doesn't matter if you area has it or not, if you live in apartments or condos you cannot get FIOS, they haven't figured out how to do stacked housing yet.

You can't get it in appartments because they put the Fiberoptic line right into your house right? Not sure how they hook it up, but i'm pretty sure they don't use phone lines.

The only downside is that it's bundled with a landline phone. After taxes and surcharges, a landline phone with no features and no long distance costs almost $30 (last bill was $28 before I cancelled it). Cable modem is expensive but still less than landline + DSL or FiOS. Plus Adelphia just upgraded me to 10Mb. :)

I already have a lanline phone due to my TiVO, so I'll still need that anyway.

The install takes about 4 hrs since they change your copper lines to fiber. I'll need them to keep a copper line for the TiVO and alarm system. They install a box near your circuit breaker and another box outside your house.

I'm getting FiOS as soon as it is available. You, lucky one, should get it immediately.

I was able to get FiOS w/o a landline phone. I have vonage for my phone service.

Been using FIOS since August and absolutely LOVE it

Pros:

-Ridiculously fast, been using P2P services like bit torrent and emule no problem with those ports being blocked

-It's fiber optic so you don't have to worry about power surges (not conductive) and power failures (unless the Verizon switching stations are out of power as well).

-It's an unbeatable cost value for the speeds you get

Cons:

-May have to upgrade router (though they do provide you with one with installation - my old Linksys router couldn't handle the full bandwidth)

-Not static IP

How come your router couldn't handle it? Most current ones are 100/1000Mb right? How is FiOPs exceed that?

Most current ones are 10/100, a gigabit router is not what I would consider mainstream as of yet, but available at a higher price tag vs. 10/100.

I guess it varies by area, but having paid as much as $1000+ a month for 1.5 mbps burstable T1's in the past, $39/mo. for 3-4 mbps. delivered reliably to the home, along with multi-address email and website space and a bunch of other marginally useful crap seems like a pretty good deal to me.
