Verizon DSL router setup question

My brother just got Verizon DSL. He has a Di-704 switch.

He got the DSL working on one machine by running their setup software. He plugs the modem into the WAN port on the switch, it detects it (turns green), but the setup for the switch does not seem to think the connection is active.

I have not been there to see the setup yet, but was hoping somebody with experience with verizon could give some info up front about what kind of setup needs to be done.

Will there be anything different than my cable setup? Will I need to put his userid and password into the switch? Is this a regular DCHP setup?

I do know that the verizon software added a dial-up connection to the machine he ran it on for some reason, but I don't know why. That machine wouldn't let him open the switch configuration in his browser because it said he needed to be online to view it.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure...he doesn't know anything and did some online setup thing to get his userid & stuff.

I was under the impression that it was DHCP, but I don't know.

What area are you in? We are in NY. If they supplied an IP to anybody in the same area, I'd assume it would be the same for all.

im in west lafayette, IN. i may have received an IP though because we using verizon but going through the RESNet of our school

You must first install the software. Some where along the software installation an ID and Password are generated (there is also a Text file that is generated with this info).

Start the Internet browser, and make sure that the in the option menu connection is set to connect through LAN (the original DSL is installed as a Dialup).

Log on to the Router, in the PPPOE menu type username and password. Make sure PPPOE is checked. Set the router to obtain IP automatically (unless you have a static account).

As long as you don't switch off the DSL Modem, and the Router you are connected "forever" (the computer can be switched off). If you switch them off, when you switch them on again, it will take a minute, and the Router will automatically will connect to the DSL ISP.

You can uninstall WINPOET and Netscape (or whatever software they dished you).
Or you can leave them installed; (The software PPPOE appears as another DialUp connection, in the Browser).

The Router's PPPOE capacity is independent from the Computer, and it keeps the connection alive.

Working through the Router in a DSL connection should yield faster smoother Internet connection.

Ahh, thanks. I think that is what the issue is going to be. I didn't know if this needed a PPPOE connection or not. That is probably what he is missing, my cable modem doesn't require I set that stuff.

Thanks...Im heading over to his house to look at it now.

Yeah mine too. No software to install. I just have to make router settings for dynamic IP. That's about it. I dont use DHCP though--I just assign internal IP for each of my system inside the network.

Thanks for the help all, it needed to be setup for PPPoE.

Then I had to remove all the verizon software from the machines. I couldn't make them work with that stuff installed even when the LAN settings were all correct.

One of the machines still wouldn't connect even after I removed all "connections". Had to run the setup wizard in IE and tell it to use the LAN before it would detect it...weird...

The PPPOE protocol is mainly used for control purposes. Verizon and other provider use it where they feel it is necessary to exercise their control. Unfortunately, they choose problematic software hence the trouble.

I would suggest to any PPPOE DSL owner to use a Router even if they don?t have a Network.
