Hey, I am getting DSL very soon (or as soon as Verizon hooks my area up). Does anyone know how long it will take for some places in Maryland to get hooked up. Plus, is it worth the wait or should I just hop on the Cable wagon?

Arg, sorry bout the double post.

No, they are the worst!

If you have alternatives I suggest you try them first.

One that I hear has excellent service is PhoenixDSL.

They give you 768/384 for $39 vs Verizon which gives you just 640/90.

I've been using Verizon for over a year now and hate them but have no real alternatives since they won't provide Phoenix a port on the local DSLAM.

If you want unbiased opinions I suggest you go to DSLreports.com.

look into Microsoft or earthlink(mindspring)'s dsl service. it should be about the same cost monthly without setup fee's and faster. i had the mindspring service. had no problems with it. it was $50 for 1.5 down/384 up (at the time bell atlantic was $40 640 down/90 up +$100 setup. the worst part was thier service. going to dsl reports (see previous post) was an excelent resource. If you remember nothing else from this post, remember this:

Verizon is Bell with a different name, and ALL of the Bell's around the nation really stink!

I meant to add this to my post. as a previous dsl and cable modem user, i was happier with cable (i have returned to cable). That can really depend though on how many people in your area are on the cable modem connection. if everyone and thier brother has a cable modem that lives near you, your speeds could seriously be reduced. where dsl is just you and the connection. that doesn't mean that if you sign up for 1.5 down that you are always going to get 1.5 down. you may never get over 600 down. it can really depend on your distance, line quality, things nearby that interfere with the copper lines. plus you are not paying for garenteed speed.

the advantage though of cable is the whole instal process is FAR quicker then DSL (a few days compared to 30-60 days)

so i would do this to decide:

1. if a LOT of people in the area have cable i would lean more to dsl
2. if i was more then 12,500 ft from the CO i would lean toward cable

other then this, either one is night and day better then dial up. good luck on the decision- i hope this helps

stay away from Bell Atlantic/Verizon DSL! I had it for 8 months, nothing but trouble, the speeds from them suck, there pppOE is garbage, they disconnect you all the time for no reason, there tech support is horriable. I have PhoenixDSL now and I am happy. Same amount per month, $40, you get more speed and a static ip. Choose anything but Verizon, there so bad, they don't care about there customers.

Hey Rebood where do you have PhoenixDSL? I've been waiting something like 3 months for it now. Those damn Hell Atlantic employees going on strike completely hosed me.

I also have been qualified for DSL and I am considering Bell Atlantic because they are cheapest ($40 a month)

I went to PhoenixDSL and they are $50 a month in my area for some reason...

Any other cost effective options you guys know about?
