I have cable and as far as I can tell, I have had the same IP address for years (only changes was they got rid of @home). I'm wondering about DSL service, specifically with Verizion in the Philly area. Is there a schedule on which an IP address expires and then changes or perhaps can the customer like reset their modem and get a new IP address. I hope this question made sense, if not I can clarify if need be. Thanks

Mine seems to be the same. It's supposed to be dynamic but its never changed since I got DSL about 3 years ago.

It's a crapshoot with DHCP and ISP's. The typical server will hand out the same addy to the same MAC address time and again.
As you pointed out, you'll get a new one when the ISP restructures the network and moves segments around.
If you want a different one, unplug the modem and go away for the weekend. Odds are very high you old address will get given away:)

Verizon DSL in Long Island (NY) changes every time that you log on. You can use an IP for two minutes, you log Off and log On (even within a minute) is would be given a new IP.

I guess it depends on policies and systems are not the same across the USA.

What happens if you have it connected to a router that keeps you logged on all the time? Does it never change, then?

The longest it was connected none stop was for few weeks and it maintained the same IP.

Thanks a lot. This is the service I have at my business and the PC's are connected to a router.
