Hello All,

Bottom Line Question: Is Verizon DSL at 3Mbps acceptable for normal internet use these days?

I'm moving to Norfolk, VA in a month and need to select a new ISP. My only options are Cox cable or Verizon DSL.

I haven't had DSL in recent memory, and it appears that DSL speeds simply haven't increased like cable, fiber, and 4G speeds have. Verizon is saying they only get about 3Mbps download at my new location.

My typical internet uses are video streaming and web browsing. Am I likely going to be able to do those? The Verizon rep was trying to sell me on the "dedicated" nature of DSL, but I never had problems with heavy cable traffic in Chicago where I came from.

Additionally, I remember back in the day there were latency issues with DSL depending on physical distance from the ISP. Is that still an issue with modern DSL?

Thanks for indulging my out-of-touch questions!

Depends on what you stream... 3Mbps isn't fast enough for Netflix HD, only SD.

Let's put it this way: On DSL 3MBS download is about the best you can expect. And being Verizon it will likely be around $35 per month. See what Cox has to offer, you can likely get a much better speed and maybe lower cost. Note also in a lot of areas, Verizon will not install "Dry Loop DSL" (that is no DSL without voice phone service as well)

Link to what Cox has in your area:https://www.cox.com/residential/internet.html

Their lowest is 15MBS Download intro for 1 year at $39.99 then it goes to $59.99 ... but it is way faster than DSL
