6-4-2004 Cell Phone Rage

The complaints range from mundane to dramatic.

After Julie McMurry's husband died last summer, Verizon Wireless told the Enumclaw, Wash. woman that she would have to pay an early termination fee on his cell phone contract. "I said, 'This isn't an arbitrary thing, I'd be glad to fax you a copy of the death certificate. The man's dead.'"

The Verizon rep said McMurry could either pay the fee or give the phone to another family member.

She called Carl Hilliard, president of the Wireless Consumers Alliance. "I just happened to be in a meeting with Verizon Wireless's attorney and mentioned it to him," Hilliard said. "It was reversed."

Claire Smith, 21, of San Diego, set up automatic payments for her Cingular Wireless bill. Cingular charged her credit card, then sent paper bills. When she didn't pay the duplicate bill, they cut off her service, saying she was delinquent. "They tried to double bill me," she said.

Neil Coleman, 34, of Jersey City, N.J., asked for a national plan when he signed up with AT&T Wireless. He worked inside his local calling area for months, then was sent to Dallas. His next mobile bill was $600, most of it roaming charges.

Calls to AT&T Wireless's customer service ended with a representative telling him it was his responsibility to review his bill. There, on page four, in the left-hand corner, in small print, the bill said "local plan."

You forgot one thing DM, I don't see anything in your post that blames Bush for this. I'm a bit stunned by that fact.

Have you ever had a happy day in your life? For christsakes, you sound like one of the old geezers up in the balcony on the Muppet Show with your constant complaining about businesses and the "rich boys' club."

You can make your own decisions based on the data.
Just saying that the same company also supports GOP by a large margin.

I had that happen to me when I first switched to AT&T Wireless 2 years ago. Seems that they had two different departments that handled normal paper bills and the auto pay bills. Each department apparently had it's own database and the two did not share information. Brilliant!!!

Specifically, what crime are they breaking? Cell phone companies get no money from me. I'm old school.

I wish once and for all people would decide that corporations have zero business in politics.

Politics should control business, not the other way around.

Overcharging dead people probably breaks a natural law in most peoples' book.

You missed that part. The attornies understood it was wrong and corrected the problem for her.

She not only told them he was dead, she offered to fax them the Death Certificate:

Corruption killed the Soviet Union. Their economy should of been able to support their programs if it hadn't been for the extra 15-20% of overhead behind the scenes. The West killed the Communist Bloc with corruption. Just fifteen years later the West teters on its legs under the same burden. Kind of makes you think the tension of a Cold War to keep things honest wasn't such a bad idea. The Terror War is hardly a comparison. Last time I checked the terrorists were coming out of our allies more than the supposed "axis of Evil nations".

Look, when you controlling the complicated billing on 40 million plus customers, a couple of mistakes are going to happen.
For example, with the Verizon rep and the dead man, Verizon had probably not put anything in their low-level CSR scripts about how to deal with a deceased subscriber and an early termination fee. The low-level CSR, not allowed to make any decisions on her own, just read from the script. I'm sure that the scripts have been changed and that problem has now been fixed.
People need to realize that when they call a cell company or other major utility, that the person that the first get on the phone has absolutely no authority and has to ask for permission to go the restroom. They can fix only minor and routine issues, so if your problem is different than the norm, you need to go up a level and expect it to take a little longer.

As far as billing and cell phone plans, most faults like squarely on the consumer. They don't read the fine print, they don't sign up for the right plan, they talk on their cell phone 24/7 while driving or in the the restaurant, they get screwed, I don't feel sorry for them. I use my cell phone every day and haven't gone over my minutes for more than 3 years. And I don't even watch my minutes. Put the phone down. It doesn't make you look cool (I had a Motorola brick in '93, now THAT was cool, a cell phone today is not), and there are real live people in front of you that you could be talking to instead... :)

The corruption in the West is largely due to the West's partial adoption of socialist and communist policies, starting in the '60s. It is impossible for government to have so much control without it becoming corrupted.

Ding ding, ding ding, double Jackpot. There may be some hope for some of the guys in here yet.

Too bad so many of the P&N'rs love the Corruption though, Rush, Hannity and CAD & Co have done a masterful job in Brainwashing the sheep into submission :(
