Verizon contract problems: porting number

Does this seem right?:

I have company phone with a business contract - the same number for 5-6 years. After switching dept's they are no longer going to pay for my phone - no big deal, they signed the official paper relieving me of all liability with the contract (and are actually paying the money to BREAK the contract they have on my phone)

I've gone to 3 verizon stores and had different problem at each, but basically if I want to keep my number I HAVE to pay full price for a phone AND sign a 2 year contract... This is because my company acct's 'upgrade date' is past 1 year from now.. Even though they're breaking the contract I still have to 'abide' by the terms since it's tied to the number... (i.e. I can't keep my old phone and just NOT sign a contract since it's somehow tied to the number itself)

I've gotten the same basic response from each manager at the three stores.

Opinions on what I can do?
