interesting. Alltel is GSM based, and Verizon is CDMA based. I wonder if they are buying alltel for the coverage of rural areas and/or the spectrum they have that can be used for data.

Didn't RTFA

I wonder if this means I'll soon see data coverage at home, since I live in an Alltel area and have a Verizon phone.

Does this mean no more Chad? :)

I wonder what this means for me? I'm an Alltel customer -- I wonder if I'd be able to weasel out of my two-year contract and switch to AT&T to nab a 3G iPhone :p

I too am currently on Alltel, I hope they don't screw up all the alltel plans.

I pay about $50 a month currently for 1000 minutes, free M2M, and 5 My Circle with Alltel. That's pretty decent for me.

I guess no more Alltel commercial poking fun at Verizon.

BTW.....Alltel SUCKS! They were notorious for ripping people off back when roaming to another network cost a lot.

Alltel is actually CDMA just like Verizon, which would be a good reason for Verizon to buy them.

Yeah, this merge makes a hell of alot more sense than Sprint and Nextel. At least Verizon and Alltel use the same wireless technology.

I signed a two year contract with Alltel about a year ago so it'll be a little less than a year before I can get a phone for cheaper. So until then I hope they don't f anything up with the merger.

What are some of the better companies that have nationwide coverage? I'm going to be moving around a lot over the next decade or so, so I'd like to stick with one company, and now is a good time to leave Alltel.

I am current Alltel customer as well, so will be watching closely to see what changes. Luckily, there is only 5 months left on my contract for one line - the other isn't under contract at this point.

Why not just stick with Verizon? They're coverage is awesome. The only reason I'd ever consider going to ATT is for phone selection. That's about it.

I don't see why anyone who uses an individual cell plan is NOT on the Sprint SERO plan. I got it with the Palm Centro a couple of months ago and both are awesome! And customer service has been good whenever I called--I get the impression they are trying very hard to overcome the perception of bad service.
<--Former VZW customer. No complaints about VZW, but Sprint offers so much for so little $.

Alltel's primary network is indeed CDMA, but I know that they operate GSM in certain areas because of their regional buyouts. A friend of mine was on GSM with a regional carrier who was bought by Alltel, and he stuck with Alltel until this spring. He jumped to AT&T so he could stick with GSM, Alltel would've made him switch to a CDMA phone if he'd upped his contract.

It's not customer service that's a problem in my area, it's just service. They have ass for towers. My company phone is Sprint, my own phone is Verizon, my phone beats the tar out of the company's.

I really hope this doesn't screw up my service with Alltel. Unlike Verizon, Alltel has a history of not artificially crippling their phones.

Yea really. Verizon locks down their phones a ton.
