Verizon Blackberry data plans

Someone is trying to tell me that if you get a blackberry on verizon your only option is to pay the $30 or $40 per month for internet, however much it is. I'm trying to tell them that they don't need any plan and they can pay for however much they use it, which can be not at all aka $0.

So which is it?

That is correct.. You are forced to have a data plan on Verizon if you have a blackberry. I pay 30$ a month for the standard BIS plan with "unlimited" data

The other option is $45 for BES access.

Jeez. Is verizon the only carrier that doesn't allow you to pay for what you use? Not that its worth it if you use it at all, but I'm sure there are some people that don't use it or don't want to

A blackberry constantly uses data.. The push services, as well as everything else are continually pinging the RIM servers. If you pay per use it will add up quickly.

Other providers may not force you to have a data plan, but the only other option if data lock. My friend on T-Mobile didnt want to pay for a data plan, so now he has absolutely 0 data ability. Its all or nothing

This is incorrect. By it's very nature the BlackBerry only uses data when it is pushed from the RIM servers. It does not 'continually ping the RIM servers'.

Once upon a time Verizon did offer "pay-as-you-use" data options but that was changed last year. As more and more people use data from their phones I wouldn't be surprised other providers adopting the same move.
