Verizon and keeping ulimited

I just used a dumb phones upgrade on my account to upgrade and keep unlimited but now that person wants to get a smartphone

My unlimited data line has an available upgrade.

Would transferring the upgrade from my unlimited data line to the dumb phone line to get a smart phone kill my unlimited data?

I was in Verizon last night and they said if you upgrade a phone that currently has unlimited and you don't want to go with the share everything plan then you get "grandfathered in" with 6gb at the 2gb price ($30). 6gb is a good bit. Not really what you were asking but might help.

You can transfer your upgrade to the "dumb" line but if you get a smartphone they are going to want you to get a data plan. You will have to cancel the data line afterwards.

that's what i was told too. didn't see that option online, so store or csr is way to go. they charge insane amounts for 50GB, so unfortunately they won't let you keep unlimited. Another idea would be to pay your next phone in full, and try to get it on verizon network.

Says different. They say Transfering an upgrade does not kill Unlimited and someone recently did that and it worked just fine.
I think the people in the store are trained to scare you...

I just transfered my upgrade (Unlimited) to a Dumbphone and bought another LG G2.

It put a 2gb plan on their line but mine still says Unlimited.

If anything happens I can just return the phone in 14 days.

When did they start that? I got stuck at 2gb on 2 lines
 
Good luck -- I vaguely remember seeing things where this situation will backfire or they closed the loophole or something. Try playing with it on your account, take screenshots the whole way, and don't hit go if it looks like they are taking away your unlimited.

And assuming the system seems to let you do it, activate the phone first on the secondary line (maybe leave it on overnight so you are sure it shows in the system) and then put the old dumbphone back on (remove the data).

You may then need to go to a store to get a new SIM for the primary line (or, throw your existing SIM in if you have one already). I had one store rep refuse to do this for me, and went to another store and had absolutely no problem. If you already have a SIM for your line this step should obviously be super easy.

I did the regular "use the second lines upgrade on that line and then put the new device (after above shenanigans) on the unlimited line" this summer and it worked fine.

edit: and if you can, get one of the new secure element SIM's while you are at it just in case you ever need one.

For a family plan? I've seen that offer for single lines called the Max plan but not seen it offered for a family plan. I've be very tempted if they'd do it for a family plan.

Its currently a family plan with 1400 shared minutes over 3 smart phones. Two lines are at 2gb each and the third is unlimited data.
 
heres what to do if you want to keep the unlimited just add another phone line to your plan and just switch that plan with the unlimited plan so you are pretty much just switching phone numbers and getting a great plan.
