Verizon 4G Outtge

I thought I would post this here so that I might save some folks from restarting their phone hundreds of times trying to restore service.

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/12/07/verizon-suffering-4g-lte-outage/

hroughout the day, I’ve been hearing from owners of 4G LTE devices on Verizon who are saying that Verizon’s next-generation network is down. And after a quick poll of GBM staff that own 4G LTE devices, I think it’s safe to say that something is amiss as our devices are also experiencing a data outage. It’s unclear at this point how widespread this outage is, or if it’s affecting every 4G LTE device.

It appears to be nationwide. I am in central IL and have been having troubles all day. My sister is about an hour south of me and she seems to not be having any troubles. Verizon has no ETA on a fix, but their service reps in the store did admit there was a problem.

I'm confused why the phone can't just drop LTE mode and get coverage under 3G. I guess I just don't understand how they work.

Huh? My phone automatically went to 3G mode and has stayed there.

Check to see if you can disable LTE in your settings. I've heard that can help with complete signal loss issues.

I set it to CDMA only and I'm still getting no data. Maybe I'll call Verizon again to see if there is something wrong on my end.

Not in my definition of the term.

1xRTT is 2G (60–100 kbit/s real world) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDMA2000
EVDO rev.A is 3G (500-1000kbit/s) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution-Data_Optimized

it meets ITU's IMT-2000 specification, so therefore is 3G.

EDGE is also 3G.

:colbert:

and there are no 4G networks either, as LTE and WiMAX don't yet meet ITU-Advanced.

:colbert:

per the ITU which is the only opinion that actually matters, not att's, sprint's, verizons, and tmo's marketing hacks.

Agreed. And what else are you going to call it when the phone itself says 3G vs 1x.
EDGE, LTE, cdma2000, EVDO, wimax, hspa, etc.

you guys don't remember just how limited actual 2G was.

I've been without data again today for a little bit of the day. I got a glimpse of 4G and then on my drive home from work (hour+), it was back to 3G and then I completely lost it about 30 minutes from home.

Yeah, you are right. I didn't realize that it's technically 3G under the IMT-2000 spec. I stand corrected.

Just as well I didnt go back to Verizon. Their 4g is always having issues, whether it be phone based or network based. And as I understand the situation, its not even true 4g anyhow.

No one has true 4g. Its a catch phrase. Hell idont even if anyone should be calling it 4g.
