Verizon 1 Minute Data Calls, Usage Type AU

What exactly is this type of call because someone I know recently went way over her phone bill and he had no idea why. When we look to see the phone record there was the occasional non-verizon that he picked up, okay that explains a little bit, but then there is a bunch (I mean at least ~300-400 maybe more, each a minute) of these things. Each is to a different area code of nearby cell tower, and it says usage type: AU, data.

He has text messages disabled, along with pictures and internet and all those types of things, so I am wondering that this is? I was thinking it was something automatic maybe syncing the cellphone (LG VX8100) with the tower, like everytime he turns it on/off (which is a lot), which if it is that is not fair. I do not have my bill to see if mine has these, and I searched the internet and verizon's website to firgure it out but I got nothing. I am going to the store tomarrow to get more information, but I was wondering if anyone here can help me.

EDIT: Could there be a system setting wrong with her phone, making it roam all the time or something?
