Verifying DMI?

My friend has an Epox 8K7A motherboard w/ a 1.4 TBird, 512MB DDR RAM and a 40 gig Maxtor HD. He just did a fresh reformat and was trying to install WinXP. XP started installing and then after one of the restarts it froze with the message 'Verifying DMI Pool...' on the screen. If you change things in BIOS it changes to 'Updating DMI Pool' and boots, but then won't boot the next time. Anyone have any suggestions?
