verifying dmi pool data

I assembled a system this morning, then had a break before beginning to install software. The last thing I did was boot to a Windows CD, then exit the installation with F3 and switch off. Now when I switch on I get to "verifying dmi pool data" and no further. If I disconnect the hard disk, or disable it in the BIOS, then I get further. It's happy to boot from a CD. But if I put the disk back then I get the message again.

Does this mean I have a bad hard disk? Or one that can be fixed with fdisk? Although I can't boot with the hard disk connected so I'm not sure what to do. Bios upgrade? I've cleared the CMOS. At this point I should mention I have no floppy drive. A weakness in my plan I know, not to have access to one.

Or is there anything else I should investigate? The motherboard is an Abit N7-M, with an Athlon 2500 and Western Digital 80 GB Caviar 8MB Cache hard disk.

If a BIOS upgrade is deemed essential then I can just go and beg, steal or borrow one.

Your WD hard drive has its own data cable, right? Set its jumper for Single Drive instead of Master or Slave (which is done by removing the jumper cap from the pins altogether, I believe). WD's are just fussy like that. 🙂
