I have an AMD Athlon Dual channel system with 4 Gig of RAM running WinXP Pro 32 bit. I recently had an update message about Adobe reader so I ran the update and then the system asked to restart. I clicked yes on the restart and then my PC POSTS up to the Verifying DMI Pool Data and then I get a Boot from CD/DVD drive and then if I let that run without a disk in it I get BOOT DISK ERROR LOAD SYSTEM DISK.
I then tried to boot up using the WinXP Start Up disk and ran the Recovery Console.
It lists d:/Windows as the only installation to choose from, but in actuality I have windows installed on c:/windows.
The HD is a 750 GB Samsung SATA which is surprising to me that it is having problems.
I ran chkdisk /r but that did not solve the boot up problem. Then I was going to try fixmbr but the warning gave me pause (about how it could cause me to lose all my partitions on the HD.)
So I thought that I should check here with the experts to see if anyone has any suggestions or if I should run fixmbr and hope for the best.
(Some other info: I have an AMD 770 BIOS for GA MA 770-120-S3-F2 version 6.00PG 1984 - 2007. Also someone else had mentioned checking the HD configuration - now I have not changed anything since the restart for the update of Adobe Reader to take effect. I did notice that in the IDE Channel 0 Master slot, it lists my DVD-RW drive with a 250 gig WD HD as slave (IDE).
Then for IDE Channel 2 Master it lists my Samsung 750GB HD as the master.
I don't think I can change those settings. I wasn't sure if this had any bearing on the problem.
Is this a CMOS problem or a MBR problem or something else. I ran that update for Adobe and then restarted but prior to that I had not restarted the PC for several weeks, just leaving it on.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
UPDATED QUESTION:
Should I just look into getting a new HD and installing the WINXP OS on it and then hook up the old 750G HD that is not booting and see if I can salvage the data from that as a slave drive?
My concern is if I run FixMBR and trash my partitions on the existing drive, I'll lose all my data and files. Appreciate any advice on this.
