haha, I actually accelerate at a normal pace, I'm just shifting into third when I hit 50.

I've owned a variety of cars in the 90's GM stable that had the 3.1, 3.4, or 3800. On message boards related to the cars, there is always someone who consistently gets 5+ MPG better than I have ever been able to acheive.

Honestly all I did was accelerate slightly conservatively and never exceed the posted speed limit. I set the cruise at 55mph and put the seat back to stretch.

The best I've done in my Fusion was 29 MPG round trip (about 60 miles total) with about 40% city driving and 60% highway. Normally I hover around 24-25 because I do mostly city driving and I'm not easy on the accelerator.

My previous '03 Malibu 3.1L regularly got 27-28 MPG with about 60/40 city/highway. The GM V6's are pretty damned good in that regard. Pretty good low-end torque, too.

Agreed on the torque, IIRC the 3.3 develops the full 185ft-lbs at 2200rpm. I also know that with the 9:1 compression ratio, it helps when you let the motor breathe. I should mention that this car has a K&N air filter [/flamesuit].

You get infinite MPG when coasting in gear. My scangauge reads its maximum of 9999 MPG when coasting in gear. The flip side of this is that the engine braking slows the car down more than coasting neutral, but if you are on a hill steep enough to maintain speed in gear, it is always better to do so.

I used to do it with the help of the Coaster here in San Diego. I'd drive the 6 miles to the Coaster station, take that down to Sorrento Valley from Oceanside and then ride the 9 remaining miles to work from there.

Tank size is one of the few things that pisses me off about my Passat. It only holds 16, which is only 1 gallon more than my old Golf did.

Nonetheless, I got 25 MPG overall out of my last tank full. Probably about 60/40 hwy/city. I've had the rolling average ticker go up as high as 32.9. 2.8 liter V6, 5 speed.
