Verbatim external harddrive auto-deleting stuff?

Hi

I have this old external 500GB capacity Verbatim HD from 2009 that's starting to scare me. It never failed me once to this day.

Last time I checked, I had 9 gb of free space. Then, without me deleting anything, it started showing 26 gb free place and now 33. I am totally sure that I didn't delete anything though. I took a very quick look and nothing seems to be missing now, but there's a ton of things stored on this HD and I can't say for sure that nothing was erased.

I'm thinking that it is possible that it deletes stuff when it gets too close to full capacity. Would this be possible? Or maybe it's just a display error and I haven't lost anything really?

Anyone familiar with this sort of issues?

If the files on the device are not backed up and of importance to you, I recommend that you get a full backup before you run any tests. If it is malware, it might delete everything upon discovery. If the drive is forming bad sectors, which is very possible with a drive of this age, any diagnostic might be the straw that breaks the camel's back, leading to a physical hard drive crash.

If you back it up without removing the malware, the backup will most likely be infected. Sounds like the drive may be too full to function properly That should not cause auto deletions, however.
