Verbatim 52x burner (lite on clone) doesn't read/burn cd's?

Is this thing just plain broke or is there something i can try to fix it? I had a few different burners installed and removed them in the device list and also removed any of their software. Then I installed this verbatim 52x, which by the way is the clone of the lite on 52x that I had on this same computer last wek in working condition. Now the verbatim gets picked up in device list, nero express is installed and updated to current version, its seen in windows explorer, but it won't burn to multiple diff typs of media nor read ANY cd. I have put know good cd's, like music, win98 disk, etc in teh burner and it just won't read anything. Do I send it back?
