Verbatim 48x16x48

I'm having an issue with my Verbatim 48x16x48 (really 48x12x28... but it came with an extra 4x in the box. 😀). I can burn at 24x, but NERO 5.5.8.2 wont' let me get any higher, even thought I have 48x discs. Most of these discs maybe be low budget, so I even tried a higher budget, known 48x disc, and it still only gives me up to 48x.

I tried reflashing the bios, and it would not let me do it.

Drive has "Seemless" burn technology, so I'm pretty sure it isn't lite-on. But, can someone point me somewhere that I coudl figure out who makes the thing? The Verbatim web site blows.

Here is the crap that WinInfo gives me:

Drive E:
Description CD-ROM Drive
Media Loaded No
Media Type CD-ROM
Name ATAPI CD-RW 48X16
Manufacturer (Standard CD-ROM drives)
Status OK
Transfer Rate Not Available
SCSI Target ID 0
PNP Device ID IDE\CDROMATAPI_CD-RW_48X16_______________________A.WZ____\5&2E24FA88&0&0.0.0
Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys (5.1.2600.1106 (xpsp1.020828-1920), 46.38 KB (47,488 bytes), 8/23/2001 7:00 AM)

Note: I have an 8rda+, WinXP pro, radeon 7000, 512MB twinmos/winbond ram, 80GB WD SE on (chan 0), and CD-RW is on IDE chan 1. Any help would be appreciated. My 32x12x40 Verbatim would allow me to write even POS discs at 32x... and never once made a coaster. SO, this newer drive is pi$$ing me off. 😉

While searching for the mfg. of the drive, first update Nero to the latest (it's at 5.5.10.20).

It appears that it's made by BenQ. Try the firmware detection tool available at BenQ to see if it is infact a BenQ drive (if Nero gives the drive firmware something like A.xx then it's definitely a BenQ. Your description of the drive in the first post shows A.WZ so it looks more like a BenQ).

Thanks for you help.

I actually found the problem. Nero has a box called "Auto-pilot" hidden somewhere. Once I UNchecked it... the option for 28, 32 40, 48x burn became available. So I guess it was just being too smart for it's own good.

But still, thanks for the Drive maker info... that will come in handy.
