I would suggest a stop over to cdfreaks for some research on Verbatim DVDs. Basically, Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation) has a proprietary AZO dye used for the recording layer, which is a very good dye - according to c't it lasts better than even Taiyo Yuden. However, Verbatim outsources their manufacturing to several plants. The ones in India and Singapore appear to have noticeably better consistency / manufacturing quality than the CMC plant in Taiwan. Those who follow DVD-Rs might recognize CMC as one of those brands that you don't want to mess with, their discs are third tier and problematic at best. Unfortunately, most of the Verbatim DVDs I have found have been Made in Taiwan, presumably at the CMC plant, and therefore more likely to have quality and consistency problems. Maybe you'll get a perfect batch, maybe you'll get a dud batch. Is it worth the risk?
If you're storing data that is important to you, go straight to buying Taiyo Yuden from a reputable online dealer, watch out for fakes. If you're looking for cheap DVDs, then this is a good deal - MIT Verbatim discs probably still beat MIT CMC branded or otherwise generic discs.
FYI also, Sam's Club carries 100Pk 16x Verbatim DVD-R or DVD+R for $41 and change, cash and carry. For those who don't like rebates.
