do these need specialy ecc/registered ram? nothing special about these vs an athlon 64 besides the overclock?

Yup, except 1MB L2. Standard 939 platform, no ECC/registered, fairly identical to A64 counterpart (3200+ in this case) but with more cache and overclockability.
 
if they're the same but better, why are some cheaper than regular athlon 64s? do mobos support them "officially?"
 
Depends on the mobo, but most seem to. If it supports X2 it will work fine, just might not be identified properly. Definitely get the latest BIOS update.
 
Just a few clarifications...

These are not dual core chips. They are Opteron Socket 939, meaning they do not need ECC/registered memory either. The big cache is nice though.
